TC Certification | How to Calculate Ingredients for Additives & Masterbatches?
When issuing transaction certificates and calculating composition, many factories are unclear about whether additives and color masterbatches should be included in the composition, as well as unfamiliar with system data entry requirements. This article clarifies the assessment rules, calculation logic, and TC reporting guidelines based on Textile Exchange's official documents TE-TXL-LOG-221-V2026.6-Calibrations-LogCalibration 226 and TE-TXL-POL-203-V4.0-Policy-for-Scope-and-Transaction-Certificates TC4.6.4.
I. Determination Rules:
1. Additives carried by polymer carriers are considered additives, but the carrier itself is not counted as an additive.
a. When masterbatch is used, pigments may be regarded as additives, but the polymer in the masterbatch should not be considered an additive. The same rule applies to flake-like particles carrying additives.
b. If the total weight of masterbatch or flake-like particles carrying additives does not exceed 1% of the net product weight, they may be considered as additives as a whole.
2. Additives such as pastes must be reported if exceeding 1%
Temporary additives (e.g., finishing agents) are not considered fiber raw materials and are not included in the material composition percentage. If the total weight of additives exceeds 1% of the product's net weight, the name and total weight of the additives must be fully entered into the system, for example: Additives = X kg.
II. Calculation Method and TC Filing Requirements
Example:
Producing 1,000 kg of finished product, with raw material inputs consisting of 950 kg post-consumer polyester and 50 kg polyester masterbatch (containing 40% polyester base and 60% pigments). For simplification, the loss rate is assumed to be 0%.
Calculation results:
Material composition: 98% post-consumer polyester (RM0189) + 2% polyester (RM0186);
Net weight: 1,000 kg;
Certified weight: 950 kg;
Three items to be reported in the system:
a. Tc Product Additional Info: "Additives = 30 kg pigments";
b. Tc Product Additives Weight: 30 kg;
c. Tc Product Additives: pigments.
Upstream-Downstream Alignment Rule: If additive components are already specified in the upstream TC certificate, downstream calculations for subsequent TCs should ignore the additive weight, follow the fiber blend ratio from the upstream source, and avoid recalculating the pigment portion.
Note: Additives are not included in the raw material ratio, but GRS products must still meet all GRS chemical control requirements, and environmental compliance cannot be waived.
