BCI Releases Chain of Custody - Self Assessment Guidance

The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a leading global program for sustainable cotton development, dedicated to promoting environmentally friendly, socially beneficial, and economically viable cotton production communities, and facilitating the sustainable use of ecological health and natural resources. The BCI Chain of Custody Standard (BCI CoC Standard) is its core certification standard, regulating the identification, isolation, tracking, and documentation processes of BCI cotton in the supply chain to ensure full traceability and authenticity from the farm to the final product, providing reliable traceability guarantees for sustainable cotton to brands, retailers, and consumers.

Self-assessment is a key step in the implementation of the BCI Chain of Custody Standard, enabling supply chain organizations to systematically review their processes, identify areas for improvement, and continuously enhance compliance and operational transparency. To support enterprises in efficiently completing self-assessments, BCI has released the Chain of Custody - Self Assessment Guidance to provide clear guidance.

Scope of Application
- All supply chain organizations that follow the Chain of Custody standard must conduct self-assessments annually, regardless of whether they have been certified.
- For the self-assessment involving subcontractors, remote assessment can be adopted, and evidence must be provided to prove that all assessment terms have been effectively implemented.
- In cases of multi-site certification: Each site independently completes the assessment, and the Central Function is responsible for coordination and result consolidation.

Time Requirements
- Initial Assessment: Initiated after 3 months of certification and completed before 12 months; it is recommended to be completed within 9 months, with a 90-day rectification period reserved.
- Special Circumstances:
   A. For enterprises that complete the initial certification audit before February 28, 2027, self-assessment is not required before the audit.
   B. For enterprises that have already engaged in BCI cotton business, the initial assessment must be completed within 12 months after the release of the self-assessment guidance document.
- Rectification Deadline: All assessments must be rectified within 90 days after completion (for multi-site enterprises, the rectification period starts from the date of the last site's self-assessment completion).

Submission and Management
- Within 12 months after the initial certification, submit a complete self-assessment report containing corrective measures and verification materials to the certification body.
- The results of the self-assessment must be included in the enterprise's annual management review.
- Self-assessment report template download: Log in to the enterprise's BCP account and access the "Help" page to obtain it.

Reminder
- The assessment is generally led by the management representative, who may appoint other assessors, but they must avoid their own areas of responsibility to ensure objectivity and fairness.
- For overdue, incomplete or uncorrected issues: issue non-conformance items.
- For refusal to correct: the certification will be suspended for at least three months.
- It is recommended that all assessment processes be fully documented and the correction records be completely preserved for internal traceability and external verification.
- Compliance is not only a responsibility but also the foundation of trust for building a sustainable supply chain. (Note: The content is based on the BCI official "Self-Assessment Guide for Chain of Custody Standard". For specific implementation, please refer to the requirements of the latest version of the standard document.)

BCK is among the first certification bodies in Chinese mainland to carry out BCI CoC audits, and it is also the only certification body in Chinese mainland that simultaneously holds the accreditations of GOTS, GRS, RCS, OCS and BCI CoC.
